Biografía
Carlos Vega (Constitución, Chile, 1972) is a contemporary Chilean artist whose practice focuses primarily on hyperrealist painting. His work combines technical mastery of oil painting with an exploration of visual culture, the reproduction of images, and the ways audiences experience art in contemporary society.
Born in Constitución, Chile, Vega developed an interest in painting at an early age. In 1998, he received first prize at the XII Muestra de Otoño, organized by the Sociedad Nacional de Bellas Artes in Santiago. A year later, he traveled to Spain to continue his artistic training at the academy of Chilean painter Guillermo Muñoz Vera in Chinchón, near Madrid.
During this period, Carlos Vega refined his traditional oil painting techniques, developing a visual language characterized by precise drawing, careful treatment of light, and detailed representations of surfaces and textures. His early investigations included still lifes, landscapes, interiors, courtyards, and gardens.
Over time, Carlos Vega’s artworks began to explore museums and exhibition spaces as settings for contemporary visual culture. Visitors photographing artworks, exhibition catalogs, museum shopping bags, reproductions of paintings, and objects associated with cultural consumption became central subjects in his compositions.
Through these everyday elements, the artist questions the relationship between original artworks and their reproductions, as well as the transformation of museums into spaces of tourism, consumption, and the mass circulation of images. His paintings invite reflection on the value of images and the ways contemporary audiences engage with art.
Carlos Vega’s hyperrealism extends beyond photographic representation through compositions that explore perception, visual memory, and the relationship between art and society. His work engages with the traditions of realism and photorealism while incorporating a critical perspective on consumer culture.
His career includes solo and international exhibitions, among them Souvenir Culture (2019), presented at Galería Ansorena in Madrid.
Through his exploration of painting, reproduction, and the viewer’s experience, Carlos Vega has developed a distinctive artistic approach within contemporary realism and Latin American art.
