How do you know if a work by an important artist is real? This is a question we commonly face. For this reason, we leave you some fundamental tips to recognize the authenticity of a work of art:

  1. The main thing is to request and corroborate its origin. This will help you to know who has owned it over the years and make a traceability that can be very useful to know if this will be an authentic work or an imitation.
  1. Know who the seller is. It is important to know who you are buying from, if it is a reliable and recognized source. The most reliable option will always be to buy directly from a Gallery with a proven track record or from a reputable art dealer. Many times, even individuals who want to sell a work of art will look for a Gallery that will provide them with the support that the sale will be authentic.
  1. Review documentation of authenticity. This generally accompanies all works and is usually generated by the artist in question. The documentation, in addition to confirming its authenticity, may be accompanied by information such as its origin and whether it has passed through institutions; if the work has been restored, how many times and on what dates; the serial number, if applicable; and other details considered pertinent.
  1. Inspect the work personally with the company of an expert who can identify details that confirm that they belong to the artist and the year. These analyses can be superficial, detailed (x-ray, ultraviolet or infrared), or graphological. The most common is to verify the artist’s signature on the work, the quality of the paint and the pigments used.
