Reynier Ferrer
Artist represented by Duque Arango
Reynier’s work is, like few others, a reflection of his life, it seems like a diary. All his moods converge in his work. He does not know how to unburden himself in any other way. It is a deeply intimate, heartbreaking work. It has moments of happiness, but I dare say they are the fewest. That is the reason, perhaps, why it costs him less to start a job than to finish it, and that first moment is very physical, emotional, almost violent. After that, everything happened and the rational, to arrive at the final result, is more difficult.

Biography
Reynier Ferrer (Havana, Cuba, 1979) is a contemporary Cuban artist based in Miami, United States, whose work explores the possibilities of Abstract Expressionism, Art Informel, and material-based painting. Through color, expressive gestures, and layers of pigment, he creates compositions that investigate emotion, memory, and the relationship between the human figure and abstraction.
From an early age, Ferrer showed an interest in drawing and visual representation. He later studied at the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts in Havana, where he developed his painting techniques and encountered different movements within Cuban modern art.
Reynier Ferrer’s artworks are characterized by densely layered surfaces, pronounced textures, and an expressive application of oil paint. His creative process combines preliminary sketches with an intuitive approach in which marks, brushstrokes, and layers of paint overlap to create compositions of remarkable visual intensity.
His artistic language establishes a dialogue between abstraction and figuration. In his paintings, human forms and recognizable elements may emerge from layers of color and material, giving rise to images open to multiple interpretations. These compositions have been described as psychological landscapes, in which emotional experience takes on a visual dimension.
Improvisation plays a fundamental role in his practice. Ferrer works on several canvases simultaneously, using gesture, movement, and experimentation with materials to develop paintings that explore the tension between chance and artistic intention.
His career includes solo and group exhibitions in Cuba, the United States, and Canada. His works are held in collections including that of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Cuba.
In 2024, Duque Arango Gallery presented Inquietantes Dicotomías in Medellín, the artist’s first solo exhibition in Colombia. That same year, the gallery presented Fragmentar la mirada in Bogotá, further expanding the presence of his work in the country.
His exploration of materiality, gesture, and emotional expression positions Reynier Ferrer within contemporary developments in Cuban and Latin American abstract painting.
