Biography

Óscar Murillo

Óscar Murillo is a prominent Colombian contemporary artist whose work has gained international recognition for his conceptual depth and his ability to address social and political issues in a provocative and reflective manner. Born in 1986 in La Paila, Colombia, Murillo grew up in a working-class family, and his personal experience significantly influences his art, which often explores issues of identity, migration and globalization.

Throughout his career, Murillo has exhibited his work in galleries and museums around the world, from New York to Tokyo. His distinctive style combines a variety of media, including painting, installation, performance and sculpture, thus creating a multidimensional dialogue with the viewer. Some of his most notable exhibitions include “Oscar Murillo: Work” at the Serpentine Gallery in London, “The Cleaners’ Late Summer Party” at Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge and “Through patches of corn, wheat and mud” at the Art Museum from Princeton University.

For his impactful contribution to contemporary art, Murillo has been honored with several awards and recognitions over the years. In 2012, he was awarded the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Prize, and in 2019 he received the prestigious Turner Prize, one of the art world’s highest awards. His ability to challenge artistic conventions and his powerful visual narratives have established him as an influential figure on the global art landscape, and his work continues to resonate with audiences around the world.
