Javier Caraballo (Barranquilla, Colombia, 1985) is a contemporary Colombian artist whose work creates a dialogue between art history and the spontaneity of children’s visual language. Recognized for his technical command of oil painting, Caraballo reinterprets iconic works by Old Masters and other influential artists, subsequently incorporating childlike drawings and gestures into his compositions. This juxtaposition of technical virtuosity and spontaneous expression has become one of the most distinctive elements of his practice, encapsulated in an idea that has accompanied his work throughout his career: “art is a children’s affair.”

Caraballo studied Fine Arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Universidad del Atlántico in Barranquilla. His artistic research developed around two primary interests: drawing and painting as forms of visual expression during childhood, and the study of works that have shaped the Western painting tradition. His experience leading art workshops with children in communities in Barranquilla played a decisive role in bringing these two worlds together and developing the artistic language that characterizes his practice today.

His Grandes Maestros (Grandes Maestros) series is one of the clearest expressions of this investigation. In these works, Caraballo recreates recognizable paintings from art history in oil on canvas, preserving essential aspects of their composition, light, and chromatic richness. He then introduces children’s drawings over these meticulously constructed images, creating works in which the precision of academic painting coexists with the freedom and immediacy of a child’s mark-making.

Through this contrast, Javier Caraballo challenges the idea of the masterpiece as an untouchable object and proposes new ways of engaging with the images that constitute the artistic canon. At the same time, he positions children’s drawing as a visual language with its own codes, logic, and expressive potential, granting it the same compositional relevance as the work of the adult artist.

His practice extends into other bodies of work and artistic investigations. In Box Art, he explores concepts of identity, anonymity, and transformation through figures concealed behind masks. In Enmascarados (Masked), Caraballo develops compositions constructed from ribbons rendered with trompe-l’œil precision, creating illusions of volume, depth, and movement.

Javier Caraballo’s art has gained increasing international recognition, with exhibitions in cities across Colombia, Panama, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, the United States, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Belgium. His works are also held in international private collections, including those associated with the Prime Minister of Luxembourg and Monaco’s Princely Family.

From Colombia to the international art scene, Caraballo has developed a recognizable visual language within contemporary Latin American art, bringing together pictorial tradition, appropriation, technical virtuosity, and childhood to reconsider our relationship with images and with art history itself.
